Elective Rotation — Geriatrics
Syllabus & Course Objectives

  1. COURSE TITLE: ELECTIVE ROTATION
  2. COURSE/PREFIX NUMBER: PHA 419
  3. CREDIT HOURS: 3
  4. CONTACT HOURS: 172 clinical hours and academic hours
  5. COURSE PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITES:  Successful completion of Year I of the PA Program and all previous rotations.
  6. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    The elective rotation in geriatrics is a one-month experience that is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to develop skills in the care of the elderly patient.

  7. COURSE OBJECTIVES: By the end of the geriatrics rotation, the student will be able to
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the comprehensive geriatric assessment.
  2. Describe the roles of the members of the geriatric assessment team.
  3. Perform geriatric assessments using standard screening tolls.
  4. Educate patients and families on issues related to well-being of the elderly (e.g., safety, polypharmacy).
  5. Provide appropriate follow-u7p care to a geriatric patient.
  6. Describe the interaction of the geriatric assessment team with the primary care provider.
  7. Identify hospital and community resources for the geriatric patient (e.g., incontinence clinic, dementia support group).
  8. Discuss issues related to financing of health care for the elderly.
  9. Perform nursing home rounds.

  2. COURSE GUIDELINES AND EXPECTATIONS:
    Policies will be consistent with those published in the Clinical Year Manual and the College Student Handbook. The 7-point grading scale in the College Student Handbook will be used.

  3. METHOD OF EVALUATION:
    Preceptor evaluation 50%
    EOR exam on Infectious Diseases 30%
    EOR quiz 10%
    Pharm Note card 10%

    No oral or written assignments in the spring or summer
