Skills you need to have:

Be able to perform the following skills:

  • A complete physical examination on the pediatric patient

  • An appropriate problem focused examination for a given problem

  • Elicit a complete history from a third party

  • Develop a patient problem list

  • Evaluate growth and development through the use of:

    • Denver Developmental Testing
    • Growth charts
    • Periodic examination
  • Clinical procedures, including:

    • Venipuncture
    • Routine immunization and allergy desensitization
    • Obtaining specimens for the throat, urine, blood culture

Interpret a chest x-ray.

Interpret the following laboratory tests:
  • CBC with differential

  • Electrolytes

  • Lead screening test

  • T4

  • Arterial blood gases

  • Reticulocyte count
  • Bilirubin
  • PKU screen
  • Urinalysis & microscopic exam
  • Serum lead

Patient Education

  • Be able to provide patient education about the treatment, disease process, and preventive aspects of care to both patient and parents.

  • Be able to give parents advice and education about:

  • Safety

  • Car seats

  • Poison control

  • Nutrition

  • Growth and development

  • Anticipatory guidance

Also Be Able To:

  • Make assessments and provide counseling for:

  • Need and frequency of return visits

  • Need for consultation

  • Know community resources.

  • Consider cost in relation to patient recommendation regarding treatment, foods, toys.
