Know the indications, contraindications, and side effects associated with the following drug groups:
  • salicylates

  • NSAID agents: COX-1 and COX-2

  • steroids

  • muscle relaxants

  • antibiotics commonly used in orthopedics

  • DMARDs

  • acetaminophen

  • Describe the use of supportive and corrective devices.

  • Be able to prescribe and refer for rehabilitation:

  • physical therapy - cold, heat, ultrasound

  • exercises

  • occupational therapy

  • Identify indications for the following:

  • artificial joint replacement

  • operative placement of wires, pins, and plates

  • Provide service and counseling for the following preventive measures:

  • pre-participation screening

  • conditioning and training

  • injury prevention.

  • Perform the skills for the following:

  • fractures—simple, stable, closed, and nondisplaced

  • sprains and strain

  • Be familiar with the following procedures (indications, contraindications, interpretation):

  • joint aspiration

  • joint and musculoskeletal injections

  • wrapping and taping

  • splint application

  • plaster and fiberglass casts
