In recognition of National Physician Assistant Day on October 6, 1998, David A. Bowers, Mayor of the City of Roanoke, presented the proclamation below to CHS PA faculty and the 1st-year class. These students are schedule to be graduated in 2000.
The first of its kind in Virginia, the CHS PA program enrolled its charter class of 24 students in August 1997. The program is partially funded by a federal grant to improve health care in rural southwest Virginia, where 19 of the 21 counties are federally designated as medically underserved areas and/or health professional shortage areas.

| Given under our hands and the Seal of the City of Roanoke this sixth day of October nineteen hundred and ninety-eight: |
| WHEREAS, | quality health care and affordable and accessible medical care are important concerns and essential for the well-being of all citizens; and physician assistants are medically trained professionals who provide comprehensive health care services and quality medical care to millions of Americans throughout the nation; and |

| WHEREAS, | physician assistants care for patients in rural towns, urban communities, and in the uniformed services; and |

| WHEREAS, | the physician assistant profession continues to grow in numbers and public respect, and members of the profession are increasingly being recognized as important members of the health care delivery team; and |

| WHEREAS, | physician assistants around the nation and in the Commonwealth of Virginia will celebrate the 31st anniversary of their profession on October 6, 1998; and |

| WHEREAS, | physician assistants in the City of Roanoke deserve heartfelt appreciation for the medical care they provide throughout the year. |
