Welcome!

The Physician Assistant Program at the Jefferson College of Health Sciences in Roanoke, Virginia, has designed this Web site especially for medical practitioners who are interested in serving as preceptors for our PA students.

Our PA Program

The first PA Program in the state of Virginia yada yada yada...

Our program prepares graduates in general medicine with emphasis on primary care delivery in rural, medically underserved areas. PA students attend classes, lab sessions, and clinical rotations in the major medical disciplines. We are fully accredited by SACS and ARC-PA. See the Jefferson College of Health Sciences PA Web Page.

PA Profession

Physician Assistants perform diagnostic and therapeutic care in diverse medical specialties, in both ambulatory and non-ambulatory practice settings, under the supervision of a licensed physician. PA's can increase patient access to primary care, promote cost savings, and improve practice efficiency and productivity. For more information, see the American Academy of Physician Assistants Web Site.

Preceptor's Role: Overview

As a clinical preceptor, you are both a role model and a teacher. Students will learn from you in two ways:

  • Indirectly by observing your practice style, your interactions with patients and colleagues, and your approach to problem solving.

  • Directly, by their own interactions with patients and through discussions with you and other healthcare providers.

You will supervise the student's clinical activities and monitor the educational process by
  • Assigning patients
  • Observing student's clinical skills
  • Reviewing student chart entries
  • Serving as a resource for clinical questions and guidance

See Preceptor Role and Student Role.
