Lauran Glover, '08,
started an initiative for more healthful restaurant fare in
Saltville, Va., while on her Community Medicine rotation.
She and other students will appeal to local restaurants to
offer more healthful choices to their clientele. They will
help restaurants examine popular menu items for ways to make
them more healthful, such as reducing sugar or salt or
switching from vegetable oil to olive oil.
Congratulations
to Bonnie MacKellar,
'08! She has earned the Ron Nelson Rural Health
Scholarship from the PA Foundation
PANCE
Results: As of 11/15/07, 29 graduates of the Class of

year's, and the score average is up 41 points from last
year's. Very hat-tip worthy!
Congratulations, new PA-C's!

Hispanic Clinic Founder
Honored with Leadership in Diversity Award
Wilton Kennedy was awarded
the third annual L. Douglas Wilder Leadership in Diversity Award by the United
Way
during a dinner on Friday, Oct. 24 at the Salem Civic Center. The award
celebrates individuals and organizations that have excelled in promoting the
spirit of diversity in our community.
In 2002, Kennedy saw the need for medical care for
children in Roanoke’s Spanish-speaking community.
Before the clinic’s opening, CRCH staff depended on
interpreters to communicate with Hispanic children and their parents. Because of
his fluency in Spanish, Kennedy was better able to communicate with children and
their parents, providing better care and helping prevent missed diagnoses and
follow-up emergency room visits.
When working with Hispanic patients at the clinic,
Kennedy focuses both on cures for existing sicknesses and prevention of future
illnesses. These preventive measures include everything from the appropriate use
of baby bottles to the recognition of learning or developmental disabilities
that may be missed because of language barriers.
Mr.
Kennedy also won the annual Carilion Health System's Hand-in-Hand for
Health Award for setting up the Hispanic Pediatric Clinic. Here is the press
release:
In early 2003, Kennedy, who is fluent in Spanish,
and the staff of the CRCH Pediatric Clinic began the Hispanic Clinic. The Clinic
is a special time on Wednesday morning when Spanish-speaking parents bring their
children to the Pediatric clinic to be treated by a Spanish-speaking healthcare
provider. According to Kennedy, being able to communicate with children and their
parents in their native language allows him to provide better care because he
doesn't have to worry about language or cultural barriers or depend upon
interpreters. This helps prevent missed diagnoses and emergency room visits.
Since it started, approximately 10 patients have visited the Hispanic Clinic
each week.
Kennedy truly enjoys his Wednesday mornings.
"It's a ton of fun," he says. "These patients are easy to care
for. They listen to you; they'll follow the care plan. The staff is great,
too."
The
Troutdale Medical Center
opened May 2003. Troutdale Medical Center owes its
existence to the hard work of members of our Class of 2002 who wrote a
successful migrant health grant proposal.
The Medical Center is located in Southwest Virginia.
